Lynda, we know you've been quite busy with TV specials, concert tours, personal appearances, and the like. Do you find time in your hectic schedule to exercise? Do you have a regular program of exercise?

I make the time. Exercise is very important to me and I really work at it. I always exercise every day, usually first thing in the morning. I have a regular pro-gram that I've worked out using hand weights. I also do 250 leg lifts in the morning, ride a stationary bike and do stretches. I run a mile and a half every day and usually spend some time during the day horseback riding with my husband Ron, or we play tennis. As a matter of fact, we were riding this morning. If I'm on location where there's an Olympic-sized pool available, I can do 500 laps.

Do you ever feel like not exercising? What do you do to overcome the feeling?

Yes, it sometimes happens that I just don't feel like exercising, but I try not to think about it. That's one of the reasons why I like to exercise in the morning. I exercise as soon as I get up. Before I have time to sit down and start to get too comfortable, I'll go out and run. Even when it's hot, I just go out and do it, and, really, once I get started, it's quite exhilarating.

What about dieting? Do you? And do you have any tips for our readers?

Who doesn't diet? Usually when I go on vacation, I'll put on some weight. So what I do to lose it is to just stop eating. I'll just drink water with lemon in it—I'll drink about two gallons a day. I keep a pitcher of water handy at all times. It really helps to ease my appetite and also it's great for the complexion. It helps keep it clear. Another advantage I have is that my husband Ron is in great shape physically, and this helps to encourage me to watch my weight and stay fit.

How big a role does nutrition play in your beauty program?

Well, we have a garden and we always use the fresh vegetables from it for our table. We avoid nitrates and convenience foods. We also watch our cholesterol intake and avoid red meat. I've always had very healthy eating habits. As a child, my diet included lots of salads and fresh vegetables. We rarely ate fried foods and not much meat. And I never never eat sweets. Once I start eatingcandy, I crave it every day, so the only way for me is to do without it altogether.

Do you believe in adding vitamin supplements to your diet?

I take vitamins every day. My brother-in-law, John Cole, heads a vitamin company, and I take his vitamins. They come in little baggies and are called "Power Paks." They're actually megavitamins, since they provide a whole day's supply. I really notice the difference if I don't take them.

You have such fantastic skin. What do you do to keep it looking so fresh and healthy?

Cleansing your skin is extremely important. I make sure I take every bit of makeup off before I go to bed. I wash with Maybelline cleanser for my face and glycerine soap for my body. I like to use a "motel-type" white face cloth, so I can see the makeup come off. First I wash with warm water and the cleanser and then I finish with a rinse of cold water to close my pores, give my skin a healthy glow, and seal in the natural oils.

Your hair is obviously in great condition. How do you keep it that way?

I have to wash my hair every day. My hair is fine and it has to be washed every day to give it body, or else it looks limp and skinny. I like to alternate shampoos. I use a clear henna on my hair to condition it and to give it extra body. The henna has a tendency to dry my hair, though, so I use it only once a week.

How do you revive your looks after a long day?

To refresh myself, I go back to my old reliable—cold water. I'll take a cold shower and it perks me right up, no matter how tired I am. I also take cat naps. If I sleep for just 15 minutes, I'm totally refreshed.

How do you handle everyday stress?

I need a quiet time for myself every day. When I'm working, I usually try to get to the set half an hour early, just to give myself time to get myself together. I also enjoy driving. During the day, I'll take a drive in my Porsche with the top down. It helps me to unwind. I also read, usually projects that I'm considering working on, newspapers, periodicals, and the Bible.

Who would you consider to be a great beauty?

Sophia Loren, because she looks like a woman. She's just totallybeautiful, feature by feature and all together. She has a wonderful beauty, and such a marvelous presence. She carries herself so well and knows exactly how to make the best of her features. Her makeup look very soft and yet the effect is dazzling.

What about your makeup routine, Linda?

I really enjoy experimenting with makeup. I must have about 15 drawers full of all shades and types that I've acquired over the years. I think you can use a lot of makeup and make it look soft. or hard—it's all in the blending. But it's very important to blend your makeup carefully, so that it doesn't look harsh. I actually have three different makeup routines that I use for various occasions. I have a three-minute routine, which is my everyday makeup. I just blend blusher up over my eyelids, brush on mascara, and put lip gloss on my lips. For my ten-minute routine, I add eyeshadow and a second coat of mascara. And for my 20-minute evening makeup program, I really like to accentuate my eyes. I also use a base makeup at night, and mascara, eyeshadow, and lipstick. Of course. I blend the makeup carefully. I use con-touring makeup when I'm filming or being photographed. Usually, I do my makeup myself, for personal appearances and singing engagements. But for films and photographs I always use a professional makeup artist.

What phase of your career do you find most enjoyable?

Singing gives me immediate pleasure and great joy. There are no restrictions on you when you're singing, as there are when you're acting in a role. I've been singing all my life. I first started singing professionally when I was fifteen. I also enjoy co-writing the material I sing. I've co-written the opening song for my special this fall.

Thank you, Lynda, and continued success in the future.
