In
the business world a few Chicanas have been able to achieve leadership
roles. One of them, Romana Acosta Bañuelos of Los Angeles, beginning in
the 1950s developed a food-processing business and later moved into
banking as well. In 1969 she was named Outstanding Businesswoman of the
Year in Los Angeles. Nuevomexicana Katherine Ortega, who financed her
college education by working in an Alamogordo bank, became the founder
of a successful accounting firm and later became a well-known
southwestern banker. Also in New Mexico, Nina Otero Warren, although
primarily an educator most of her life, came to be a prominent leader in
the real estate and insurance business in Santa Fe. Tejana Cathi
Villalpando achieved distinction in the oil business and in
communications, and in California actress Lynda Córdoba Carter has her
own dramatic production company and. is also an entrepreneur in the
cosmetics industry. During the eighties Ofelia Viontejano became
recognized as an outstanding fashion designer. Nearly all of these
Chicanas also took active roles on a variety of fronts through community
groups, social agencies, unions, and networks in law, business, and
higher education. |
