"On
loan to the Las Vegas Police Department, Starsky and
Hutch search for a killer who has been victimizing
chorus girls. Posing as sore-loser high rollers, the
detectives plan to pick a fight that will land them
in jail in order to get inside information. The
problem is, once our boys hit the tables, they can't
seem to lox! A more serious concern arises when the
prime suspect appears to be Hutch's old high school
buddy. Guest stars include Paul Burke (TV's Twelve
O'Clock High) and Frank Converse (Coronet Blue).
Aker finishing in the Top 20 and averaging a
near•40%share in its first year (when it aired
Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.), Starsky & Hutch moved to
a new night and time in September 1976 to goose up
ABC's Saturday lineup. "The Las Vegas Strangler" was
the first of two consecutive two-hour all-star
specials launching the second season premiere.
Anticipating another big audience fur the season
premiere, ABC seized the opportunity for some cross
promotion. The Alphabet Network believed that Lynda
Carter (the star of Wonder Woman) and Roz Kelly
(Pinky Tuscadero, Fonzie's girlfriend on Happy Days)
would be two of its biggest stars in 1976, so it's
no ¬coincidence that both actresses had prominent
roles in this particular episode. Starsky & Hutch
went on to win its Saturday 9:00 p.m. time slot
consistently throughout the next two seasons. Much
of the success of Starsky & Hutch is attributed to
the special onscreen chemistry between David Soul
and Paul Michael Glaser. That's not a surprise,
considering the actors had been good friends for
nearly ten years before they worked together for the
first time on the series. The two grew even closer
as a result of their relentless dedication w the
show and mutual belief in their characters. "I don't
think of myself of David Soul anymore," said Soul in
1975. "I'm David Hutch, and Paul is Paul Starsky." |
