Born in Phoenix, the youngest of three children, Lynda made her professional singing debut at fifteen in -Tempe, Arizona. In 1973, she won the Miss World-U.S.A. title and shortly thereafter outdistanced hundreds of actresses for the part of Wonder Woman. Lynda has been the recipient of an unprecedented number of beauty-oriented honors. inducting from the London-based International Academy of Beauty. the title of "the most beautiful woman in the world." She has, in addition, been named one of Mr. Blackwell's "Ten Best Dressed Women in America". one of Helene Curtis' "Ten Best Tressed Women in America", one of the In - ternational Bachelors Association's "Ten Most Exciting Women in the World" and according to a Gallup Poll, is one of the ten most admired women in the world!

With this history, it's no wonder that Lynda was recently appointed Beauty and Fashion Director of Maybelline. Beauty is and always has been part of her life. With her performing commitments and her new position with Maybelline. Lynda doesn't have a great deal of free time. Her hectic schedule does not allow for constant primping. So Lynda keeps her beauty and makeup routine simple enough to be incorporated in even the busiest schedule. Here Lynda Carter shares some of her beauty habits with us.

WITH YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE, HOW DO YOU FIND TIME FOR A BEAUTY ROUTINE?

"You just have to make a habit of beauty. As far as a beauty routine goes, basically its clean skin. You have to start with clean skin. And I drink a lot of water."

WHEN DID YOU START MAKING BEAUTY A "HABIT"?

"My mother started me. For as long as I can remember, my mother emphasized the importance of diet, exercise and clean, clear skin. She used to chastise me for not washing my makeup off at night. When I first beganwearing makeup, my mother warned 'You'll find out ...if you don't wash your makeup off, your skin will suffer. You'll get wrinkles.' I figured she must be right because my mother has always had the most incredible skin. She is here now and we've been looking at lots of old pictures. There's very little difference between the way my mom looks now and how she looked 10 years ago. Her beauty routine has paid off. "I clean my skin in the morning and at night. If I had a particularly active day, I'll cleanse my face during the afternoon. And I use a three-step cleansing system byMabelline."

HOW DID YOU LEARN ABOUT MAKUP?

"Basically I looked through magazines trying to find people with blue eyes and dark hair. Seeing what they did and how they applied makeup was helpful. My mother taught me about skin care ... but I taught her about how to apply makeup."

WHAT ABOUT YOUR MAKEUP?

"I don't wear much makeup during the day, just a bit of eye makeup and mascara. Because I have to wear lots of makeup while I'm working, I don't like to wear a makeup base every day. Instead I use the Maybelline Moisture Whip moisturizer. The nice thing about this line is that it's aimed for active people—even has sunscreen in it. I simply smooth on my moisturizer in the morning. I feel good knowing that while it's protecting my skin from dryness and too much sun, it's also combating earl wrinkles."

WHAT KIND OF EYE MAKEUP DO YOU PREFER?

"I like the new soft pencils for eye shadow. When pencils first came out, they really weren't very good for under your eyes be-cause you had to press so hard that you would end up pulling your skin. But the new pencils are ver soft. They blend very easily and the color stays very well. I don't have any one favorite shade, I like to play around with eye makeup a little hit. Experimenting with new colors is always fun."

SO YOUR EVERYDAY MAKEUP IS KEPT SIMPLE?

"Yes. I start with the protective moisturizer, then use a pencil for shaping and shading my eyes, apply mascara, outline my lips and finish with some lipstick. "Of course, if I'm going out for an inter-view or something, I'll use foundation, powder and blush as well."

DO YOU HAVE ANY BEAUTY PROBLEMS?

"When I'm working, I have to wear heavier makeup and with the hot lights my pores can open and get clogged. So I have a tendency to break out or have little patches of eruptions. That's why I have to be very careful about how I clean my skin. It's also important to rinse your face thoroughly in order to ensure that you've removed every bit of makeup, oil and cleanser residue."

DO YOU HAVE ANI' ADVICE ON HAIR CARE?

"Again. it's that beauty (whateyer aspect) is very simple. Go with your looks ... don't try to change yourself. You know your flaws and your assets. Augment the good features and play down the bad. Find a style that suits your hair type and your life style. "I happen to have very fine hair. I have a lot of it but it's very fine. I just can't wash it even day or it would look awful. I wash my hair every couple of days or whenever it needs it to look clean and shiny. I change shampoos. Oh. one other thing is that I al-ways start off with warm water and always rinse with cold water. The same is true whether I'm washing my hair or taking a shower. After I take a hot shower and wash my hair, I turn the water to as cold as I can take it. This cold rinse closes my pores, leaves my skin tingly and hair shiny. "I've gone to the same hair stylist for years. She gives me a good basic cut and an application of henna (natural henna with no color added) for condition." (Note: Henna coats the hair shaft and acts as a conditioner for up to three months. It's good for Lynda because it not only conditions but gives some body to her fine hair.)

YOU HAVE A FABULOUS FIGURE. CAN YOU OFFER ANY' HINTS ON SHAPING UP?

..If you have to lose 10 pounds. instead of trying to lose them all in one week, lose 2 or 3 pounds in a week and maintain that weight. Make the changes slowly and live with them. "Exercise is something that you have to work at continually. I change my exercise pattern constantly. I will to more or different kinds of exercise depending on my needs at the time. But it's not a one-time event—I exercise every day."

YOU'VE BEEN ON THE "BEST DRESSED WOMEN IN AMERICA" LIST. WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS ON FASHION?

"That's another area where my mom has been helpful. She taught me to buy classic clothes. -That way you can wear what looks good on you and still be fashionable. And rather than replacing clothes that arc out of style, try to alter them. For instance, I don't wear bell bottoms when straight legs are in. I just take my pants to the tailors and have them taken in—I don't go buy a whole new set of everything. You don't have to do that! I basically chess conservatively. My even day wear is a pair of jeans and either a t-shirt or a silk shirt and a jacket. I'm not into status. Every once in a while I'll go crazy and buy something different, but that usually ends up staying in my closet.'.

SINCE YOU ARE CONSTANTLY IN THE PUBLIC EYE, YOU MUST PAY' .4 GREAT DEAL OF ATTENTION TO YOUR LOOKS. DO YOU THINK YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE 'WOULD BE ALTERED DRASTICALLY IF YOU WERE NOT A CELEBRITY?

"I probably would not be as conscious of everything. Right now. being so much in view, I feel an obligation to look the best I can. So I must be a bit more conscious of my looks than someone who is not in the public eye. However. I don't think my routine would be altered that much. After all, my family is very careful about looking and being healthy. So I think my routine would remain pretty much the same—it's really simple."

FINALLY. DO YOU HAVE AN ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW IN YOUR CAREER FOOT-STEPS?

"Achieving success in the entertainment field is a very individual process. There's no tragic answer. I think that success starts with discipline, though. If you want to do some-thing, then you do what it takes in terms of your own preparation. If you want to sing. then you listen and learn and you sing and you do. If you want to model, learn what you can then go out and do it. Modeling today is very individual, free form and natural. You nerd to develop your own look—your own style. The clays of affecting a certain image or emulating another's style is over for both models and actresses. You begin with 'you' so that's what you have to work with. Project your own individuality into your work—acting, modeling, singing or whatever.
