With used car salesman Ed
Judson as her agent, young Margarita Cansino lands a seven year contract
with Columbia Pictures and becomes Rita Hayworth. Her rise to stardom
and fame is meteoric, but has its price as the tyrannical head of
Columbia, Harry Cohn, attempts to control her entire life. She tries to
escape his clutches and find happiness by eloping with Judson but she
discovers that he sees the marriage as nothing more than a lucrative
business merger. After divorcing Judson, she marries the legendary
actor-writer-director Orson Welles, who proves to be more of a genius
than a husband. She leaves him and goes on a publicity tour in Europe,
after being warned by Cohn to Stay away from men. But she finds herself
in love again when her passions are ignited by the Moslem Prince
Aly-Kahn. Cohn is infuriated when she marries the Prince and gives up
her career for him. But the Prince has no intentions of giving up his
philandering ways, and Rita's vision of a happy family life is once
again shattered. When she returns to Hollywood, Cohn has his revenge by
forcing a second-rate script on her for her comeback film. Rita,
however, finally realizes her clout as an international star and
threatens to walk out on Cohn if she isn't given bet-ter scripts. When
he backs down for the first time, she finally feels in control of her
life —and gains a new spirit of pride and independence. |
