Okay, okay, so it isn't California. But Lynda Carter, alias Wonder Woman, concedes that the Delaware shore still has its attractions. Enough attractions, in fact, to bring her and her husband, Washington attorney Robert Altman, to Bethany the past three summers.

"It's very different from the West Coast. What startled me is that the sun sets in the wrong direction" says Carter, "In California, sunset at the ocean is a very special time. But then I saw a sunrise [at Bethany Beach] and that's spectacular."

Homes are roomier here. "On the coast of California, with the high property values, the houses are smaller," she says. "You

have condominiums, row after row, of them. They're beautifully decorated, but very small."

Staying busy's no problem, says Lynda. "We do everything - rent rafts, walk on the beach, rent bikes and play tennis. We buy t-shirts and hats and walk along the boardwalk. I love the arcades, especially the pinball machines."

Her favorite beach food is a cheesesteak sub, a special treat she doesn't find in California. The Altmans also like to barbecue on their small hibachi and prepare fruits and vegetables, some from roadside stands on the way from Washington. "The best part of the trip is the drive over - the beautiful country-side and the local people selling those lovely jams and real maple syrup that would cost a fortune in Georgetown (D.C.)."

Can Wonder Woman conceal her identity at the beach'? Not always. "Occasionally, you get a realtor who lets the word slip, and as the week goes by, more and more people wander down the beach and stare. It's unfortunate, because you don't want to have to wear makeup," says Carter. "We like our privacy."

Lynda and Robert met at a dinner party in Memphis three and a half years ago. -they were both in town for business, and a mutual friend introduced them. "I was enchanted," says Carter, "He's 38, tall, good-looking and smart:," successful, too. Altman is a corporate attorney as well as president of First American Bank. "That certain independence is nice," she says. "I have my career and am married to someone with his."

Carter's own career has been multifaceted. She performs regularly in Atlantic City and Las Vegas, has starred in five TV variety specials and has had dramatic parts in several telemovies, including the starring role in "Rita Hayworth, The Love Goddess." This woman who hates to wear makeup at the beach is also beauty and fashion director of Maybelline Cosmetics, as well as host of the annual Lynda Carter/Maybelline Tennis Classic.

With their two busy schedules, the Altmans have a hard time fitting in their vacation time at the beach. But they'll probably show up at a Delaware roadside stand to buy jelly some weekend soon.
