GLOBE 'Lynda is going through a very hard time'
TV Wonder Woman Lynda Carter is courageously fighting a secret addiction to alcohol at the same rehab center where the late Michael Kennedy and Chris Farley battled their demons, claim sources.
"It's very hush-hush, an insider told GLOBE. "No one is supposed to know she's there. She's suffering from alcohol addiction."
Lynda's spokesperson denies Lynda is in alcohol rehab.
Insiders say the 46-year-old former Miss World USA secretly checked into Father Martin's Ashley Treatment Center in Havre de Grace, Md., after New Year's under the name "Jean R."
The actress later decided to use her real name Lynda A. -for Altman, the name of her attorney husband Robert Altman,
father of her son Jamie, 10, and 7-year-old daughter Jessica, say sources.
"Lynda said she made the name change to be honest, because the rehab program was about honesty," the pal explains. "She said she'd gotten flack from other patients and just wanted to fit in."
The buxom actress, who also pitched Maybelline cosmetics, was admitted to the clinic for a two-week stint, but opted to stay longer, say sources. "She told a friend she was extending her treatment," says a source. "She wasn't sure for how long, and was taking it day by day."
Early in her stay, sources say, Lynda got upset when other patients recognized her and began introducing her to visiting family members as "Wonder Woman."
But at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, insiders say she realized she had to admit her problems and her identity -if the treatment was going to work. "There's a woman's meeting on Wednesday night when people say, `I'm so-and-so, and I'm an alcoholic,"' the pal confides. "That's when Lynch came out and admitted her identity. She even autographed other patients' AA books with her real name."
She also made an appointment to have her hair done at the beauty parlor using her real name, say sources.
Pals say the twice-wed beauty - who skyrocketed to fame on the Wonder Woman series from 1976-79 - has been under tremendous stress over the past few years.
While helping her husband weather an international banking scandal in 1993, she continued to star in cosmetics commercials and TV movies and was also caring for her young children.
"Lynda is going through a very hard time now," says the source. "You've got to remember that she's a beautiful actress who is getting a little bit old. She's trying to deal with her life, family and kids and a husband in a high-pressure job.
"It's all been a bit too much for her. Hopefully, the treatment will get her back on her feet again."
After GLOBE told Lynda's sister Pam Gilbert, 48, about what we learned, Pam says she expects Lynda to bounce back: "We've always been there for each other," says Pam of Phoenix, Ariz. "I pray for her and love her dearly."
