In
1976 skeptical network executives had their minds set against a Wonder
Woman television series. They didn't like the campy style of earlier
costumed hero programs, and a 1974 Wonder Women pilot played straight
had failed in the ratings. |
|
When Lynda Carter came along, Wonder Woman got a second chance: "Instead
of making her campy, I tried to make her real;" Carter says. "From the
start Wonder Woman wasn't just another TV character-I was living out a
fantasy:" To prepare for the role Carter began a strict diet and an
intense exercise regimen. One of her fitness instructors recalls the
former Miss USA's dedication: "She didn't want to play Wonder Woman, she
wanted to be Wonder Woman.' |
|
Carter's exotic, statuesque beauty made her an ideal Amazon princess.
She is 5'10" and of Spanish-Irish descent. Most importantly, her natural
athleticism and physical confidence enabled her to don the
starred-andstriped uniform with sprightly energy and convincing poise. |

The New Original Wonder Woman began on ABC in 1976, with the action
taking place in the forties. Then, in 1977, the show moved to CBS and
was updated to a seventies time period until its cancellation in 1979. |
|
Carter attributes the show's success to "the development of Wonder Woman
as a positive feminist role model. This was partly a conscious effort
and partly a natural growth as the series progressed. Wonder Woman is a
complex character, a strong, pretty woman who is also intelligent and
has a sense of humor. For kids-both girls and boysseeing a beautiful
woman in a powerful role was a very positive influential experience." |
