Based on the comic book character of the same name, Wonder Woman, the TV series had two distinctive formats and several title changes during the four years that it was on the air. All of the episodes from all the versions are now in syndication under the banner Wonder Woman.

The first version of Wonder Woman first appeared in The New, Original Wonder Woman, a 90 minute TV movie in the fall of 1975 on ABC. Set during WW II it told the tale of Princess Diana, an immortal resident of Paradise Island. All of the residents of Paradise Island are Amazon women, men being forbidden to live there. Steve Trevor, an American pilot, is shot down over Paradise Island, rescued by the Amazons and nursed back to health. Since he can not stay, a contest is held to determine who will take him back to the man's world. Princess Diana who has developed a crush on him wins the contest and brings him back to civilization. She decides to stay with him in the guise of his new secretary Diana Prince and help defeat the Nazis, both in her civilian identity and as the super heroine Wonder Woman. Besides strength and abilities that are above and beyond those of mere mortals Wonder Woman also has at her disposal metal bracelets which can defect bullets, an invisible airplane and a golden lasso which causes whoever is captured by it to obey Wonder Woman's commands.

The movie proved successful enough for ABC to order two hour long episodes featuring Wonder Woman. These went by the title The New, Original Wonder Woman and were aired during the spring of 1976 as a replacement for The Bionic Woman which went on hiatus while its star Lindsay Wagner recovered from an injury. These proved successful and 11 more episodes were ordered for the fall of 1976. Going by the title of Wonder Woman these episodes were run mostly on a sporadic basis. All of the ABC episodes were set during WW II and for the most part featured Wonder Woman battling the Nazis in one form or another. A very young Debra Winger appeared in several of the ABC episodes as Wonder Woman's younger sister, Drusilla, aka: Wonder Girl.

In the fall of 1977, the series moved into a regular timeslot on CBS and was revamped into the present day. The series title was changed once again, this time becoming The New Adventures of Wonder Woman. The changes to the format are explained in the first episode under the new title. Wonder„ Woman had retired to Paradise Island after WWII. When a plane carrying Steve Trevor Jr. (who looks just like his dad did) crashes on Paradise Island, Wonder Woman decides to return to the outside world with him. Steve is hypnotized into forgetting his visit to Paradise Island and is made to believe that Diana is his new assistant. Steve Jr. is an agent of the IADC, the Inter-Agency Defence Command, a US spy organization. IADC is headed by Joe Atkinson and has most of its information stored in IRAC, a computer that has deduced that Wonder Woman and Diana Prince are the same person. The CBS episodes featured mainly mad scientists and spies as the adversaries, although occasionally alien invaders made appearances.

Before the Lynda Carter version of Wonder Woman finally made it to television, two other attempts had been made to bring the character to television. The first of these was Wonder Woman, an unaired pilot produced in 1966. This short pilot was produced by William Dozier- the man responsible for Batman and Green Hornet- and was so campy that it made Batman look serious in comparison. Ellie Wood Walker portrayed Wonder Woman. In this untitled story Wonder Woman's mother tries to talk Wonder Woman into having a good meal before she sets out to rescue Steve Trevor (whose plane may be in trouble due to a storm). The second of these was a 90 minute TVM entitled Wonder Woman that aired in 1974.     It starred Cathy Lee Crosby in the title role, wearing a costume that looks nothing like the one in the comic. Also starring in this second effort were Kaz Karas, Ricardo Montalban, Andrew Prine, Charlene Holt and Anita Ford. The storyline dealt with Wonder Woman helping the US government in recovering a book listing all of their agents abroad.
